NW-7 is the name for Codabar in Japan. Codabar was developed by Monarch Marking Inc., in 1972 and they were one of the first companies to introduce bar code to Japan. The name comes from the two type of bars it uses, Narrow and Wide and the fact that each character is made up of seven black and white bars. The Japanese standard for NW-7 is JIS X 0503, and was established in 1994.
Some information about NW-7 is available at the Nippon Barcode Co., Ltd. web site.
